Learning With Magic

The boys love watercolor painting and I love easy activities! Whenever I bring out the paint they always want to know what’s going on. This time was no different.

How To Crate It

I already prepped my paper by writing my words on a sheet of paper with a white crayon. For Blake (6yo) I wrote his sight words (it’s something we’ve been working hard on and have done other activities with, like this one) that started with the same letter.  Zack (3yo) on the other hand had family members’ names. As the boys painted the words/names started to appear, they loved the surprise of seeing what was going to come up next! I had Blake read me the words and went over the names with Zack. When Zack was done he was proud of his work and taped it to the wall!

What They Learned

This activity worked a lot of different things for the boys! As we did it we talked about the letters as they started to appear working on letter recognition. The colors were another thing we talked about besides just naming colors they used we watched the colors mix and talked about what was happening when they mixed the colors. When the started to thin out and get soggy I asked questions about what happening and why. They also worked on their fine motor skills with the painting and searching for the words!

What I’d Do Different

By doing this simple activity with my preschooler and elementary son I realized just how much water they use when they paint so you’ll want to use cardstock so the paper doesn’t rip. This activity is perfect for kids of all ages since it’s easily customizable! You could do words, letters, shapes, pictures, and even math problems depending on their age or what they need extra practice on!
